La Jolla

Feels more like a beach town than a suburb.

Welcome to La Jolla

A beautiful coastline and a laidback lifestyle.

Along the rugged coast of the Pacific Ocean in Southern California sits the San Diego suburb of La Jolla. In addition to stunning ocean views, La Jolla provides its residents with the Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve and two scenic golf courses.

Overall, La Jolla experiences temperate weather. The temperatures typically range from 50 to 77 degrees and rarely do the temperatures fall below 44 degrees or above 84 degrees. The trail winds also keep La Jolla relatively cool for a southern city.

Approximately 38,000 people live in La Jolla, with the division between men and women almost even. The tourist season typically runs from early June until mid-October.

Local Lifestyle

La Jolla feels more like a beach town than a suburb. In addition to the beautiful natural attributes, La Jolla's close-knit community and wonderful people add to its charm.

La Jolla also offers fabulous restaurants, arts, and shopping experiences. It's an excellent place for retirees, but many young families live here since the high-tech employers pay well and the schools are exceptional. It's an ideal community for strivers and doers who want to live in a relaxing environment. Some of the locals refer to their laidback way of living as the coastal chill.

Dining, Entertainment, & Shopping

La Jolla's celebration of different cultures helps make it an exciting foodie city. Dukes's La Jolla got its inspiration from Hawaiian Duke Kahanamoku. Duke wasn't just royalty but an Olympic swimmer and the father of modern swimming. Duke's serves traditional island plates with a contemporary twist.

Piatti's is the place to go for Italian soul food. They make homemade pasta and sauces every day. They're known for a comforting atmosphere and terrific service. But, if you'd rather enjoy your pasta at home, they also offer an Italian Market on the premises.

One of the best restaurants in the La Jolla area is The Marine Room. This restaurant boasts an unbelievable seaside view and serves fabulous food, from lobster tails to Angus filet steaks. It’s no wonder they've been around for over 80 years. Many people visit the Marine Room for special occasions.

For a unique shopping excursion, head to George's at the Cove. While shopping at the collection of boutiques and visiting galleries and museums, you might also enjoy dining at one of the eateries as you gaze at the fantastic La Jolla Cove views.

Things to Do

Of course, residents and visitors in La Jolla love to spend time at the beach. Black's Beach sits at the southern end of Torrey Pines State Beach and north of La Jolla Shores. It's surrounded by lavish mansions where horses once roamed on the Black family horse farm. That's where it got the name Black's Beach. Its impressive swells make it a popular place for surfers.

The Concourse de Elegance Car Show represents an event that car collectors and enthusiasts look forward to every year. The best part about this elaborate car show involves the charitable contributions.

You'll find La Jolla Playhouse at the University of California, San Diego Campus. Gregory Peck, Mel Ferrer, and Dorothy McGuire founded the theater in 1947.
